Middlesbrough GUM Clinic on the move

The department of Genito Urinary Medicine, at Middlesbrough General Hospital officially moved to the James Cook University Hospital, Marton Road Middlesbrough on 28th June 2003. We moved into a purpose built department which will enable us, in the future, to treat more patients, as we hope in time to increase our staffing levels - doctors and nurses.

The department is now situated within the main hospital, as historically most GUM departments were often a separate building. We are hoping that with this relocation we will bring sexual health care to the patient within the main outpatient setting.

Our telephone number 01642 854548 and appointment times remain the same, but in the future we do hope to increase our clinic sessions.

Open Day at GUM Department, The James Cook University Hospital

The staff at Middlesbrough GUM played hosts to people from various walks of life and various hospital departments on 18th September 2003. All the guests including the Chairman of Middlesbrough Council, Councillor Peter Porley and his wife Paula Porley were among the guests. Others included the Chief Executive of the hospital Mr Bill Murray OBE and the hospital chaplain Rev Philip Carrington MBE. They were all conducted around the new premises and were shown all the new facilities and equipments.

The occasion was also used to celebrate 40 years long service of the Clinic Manager Sister Sandy Relph. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers, bottle of wine and chocolates by the Chief Executive of the hospital.

The department is now within the main hospital and it is hoped that this integration will further decrease the stigma associated with sexual health services.

Dr AA Opaneye, Clinical Director
