South -Tees Hospital NHS Trust epidemiological research visit to Nigeria: 9th - 16th October 2003.

This was a collaborative study in Lagos between two institutions - The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, and the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Ikeja in Lagos State, where the studied patients were women attending the antenatal clinic.
At Kara Motor Park, Sagamu, (about 50 miles north of Lagos), the studied patients were motor park workers and our partners were staff of Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State. Ethical approval was obtained for all the studies.

The visit gave members of the different institutions to exchange knowledge and ideas on various aspects of sexual health especially about sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. A symposium was organised for one afternoon when Dr. Abayomi Opaneye and Sister Lois Sewell spoke on " National Sexual Health Strategy: the UK experience." The Chief Medical Director, Dr. O. Olugbile, chaired the meeting. The event was well attended by members of the college of medicine and of the teaching hospital.

Despite the busy schedule, the team from UK- Lois Sewell, Anne Anderson, Lucy Gardner, Yemisi Opaneye, Phillip Rosenbrier and Abayomi Opaneye had time for social visits to Ikoyi Club, Lagos Country Club Ikeja, Lekki Pennisula and Tejuoso market in Yaba. It was a visit enjoyed by all.

Abayomi Opaneye.
